1,3-Butadiene, frequently referred to as butadiene, is a simple conjugated diene with the chemical formula C4H6. It is predominantly used as a monomer for producing synthetic rubber in industries. It is produced as a byproduct of the steam cracking used for producing ethylene and olefins; it is also produced from dehydrogenation of n-butane. The global demand of butadiene has been increasing as main application of butadiene is in the production of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and styrene butadiene rubber which is basically used for manufacturing automotive tires.

Global butadiene demand was estimated to be around 10.5 million tons in 2011. In terms of revenues, the market was estimated to be worth over USD 40 billion for the same year.
