Plant-based Milk Market Statistics
Global sales of plant-based milk products accounted for more than US$ 13.2 billion in 2021. Growing demand for vegan food items and beverages and consumers’ inclination toward dairy alternatives is triggering the growth of the plant-based milk market. Between the years 2021 and 2031, the valuation of the market is expected to increase at a CAGR of nearly 9%, surpassing the US$ 30.8 billion mark by the end of the forecast period.
Here are some explanations for how the plant-based milk market is expected to grow during the next decade.
Can Plant-based Milk be Beneficial as Dairy Alternative for Patients with Health Conditions?
The incidence of health conditions such as gluten allergies and lactose intolerance can be seen to be on the rise across the world in the last decade. A recent study finds that more than 40% of the global population is currently diagnosed with the condition of lactose intolerance.
The condition is more prevalent among cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radioiodine treatment, whereas many young children are also being born with the condition. These individuals are switching to dairy alternatives and thereby, the consumption of plant-based milk is constantly on the rise across the globe.
Manufacturers in the plant-based milk market are also launching products that are rich in nutrients including protein, calcium, potassium, iron, and vitamins B and D. Thereby, individuals with nutritional deficiencies can also be benefitted from these plant-based milk products. This is emerging as an important factor contributing to the growth of the plant-based milk market in recent years.
Impact of COVID-19 on Plant-based Milk Market: Positive or Negative?
Outbreak of COVID-19 has had a significant impact on businesses all around the world. Manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, and all the other stakeholders in the plant-based milk market have also experienced disruptions in business operations due to travel restrictions during the pandemic.
However, many consumers around the world have become more health-conscious during the COVID-19 outbreak. Awareness about the positive health impacts of plant-based foods and beverages has grown tremendously among consumers.
Manufacturers in the plant-based milk market can capitalize on this trend by encouraging consumers to shift from animal-based products to plant-based products and dairy alternatives. Market players are also highlighting the nutritional value of plant-based protein and other advantages in terms of taste and texture.
Thereby, health consciousness has increased among consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this is expected to contribute positively to the growth of the plant-based milk market in the long run.
Chemical-free, Additive-free, and Non-GMO: Three Magic Words for Plant-based Milk
As consumers continually become aware of the health impacts of chemical additives, their label consciousness has become an important aspect when making a purchasing decision. Consumers are keeping away from products that contain preservatives, added colours, and other chemicals.
Especially, millennials are among the important consumer bases that are driving the demand for organic and all-natural food products. This is expected to open a new window of opportunities for manufacturers in the plant-based milk market in this consumer segment across the world.
Furthermore, governing bodies in most regional markets have imposed strict labelling guidelines for products marketed as ‘organic’ or ‘natural’. Such regulations and laws favour consumers’ needs for healthier food items. This will also trigger a significant marketing and labelling trend in the plant-based milk market.

Are Flexitarian Diet Trends Pushing Markets in North America and Europe?
The transition from daily products to dairy alternatives including plant-based milk products is not new in western countries. Especially in the United States, the demand for plant-based milk is significantly high, as the region accounts for more than 80% share of the North American market for plant-based milk.
Consumers are resorting to flexitarian diets as the pervasiveness of vegan food continually increases in the region. Furthermore, the rise in prevalence of health conditions such as protein allergies and lactose intolerance is also pushing a mounting number of consumers in the U.S. to switch to dairy alternatives.
Manufacturers are capitalizing on the recent changes in consumer lifestyles that are driven by rising health consciousness. This will not only create profitable possibilities for new product development in the plant-based milk market but also have a significant impact on the functional food and beverage industry.
In the case of European countries, flexitarian diet trends are also replicated, as consumers are highly motivated by environmental concerns and animal compassion in the region. Growing adoption of the vegan lifestyle is expected to primarily trigger growth for the plant-based milk market in the United Kingdom at a CAGR of around 8.5% during the forecast period 2021-2031.
What are the Impacts of COVID-19 in Asian Markets for Plant-based Milk?
The pandemic of COVID-19 has had a major economic impact on most Asian countries, causing travel restrictions and disruptions in supply chain management for most businesses. However, some Asian countries are seeing a slight rise in the incidences of lactose intolerance among children and young adults.
Furthermore, the growing popularity of western diets for a healthier lifestyle is also pushing the demand for dairy alternatives in the Asia Pacific region. In the coming decade, China is expected to account for nearly 60% revenue share of the global plant-based milk market. Apart from China, the Thailand market is also expected to showcase positive growth traits, as the demand for plant-based milk is likely to increase at a CAGR of around 9.2% from 2021-to 2031.

Here are the notable developments in the plant-based milk market that define prominent strategies of leading market players:
In August 2021, Danone SA (Danone) – a European manufacturer and producer of dairy and nutritional products – announced that it is moving its focus on expanding its product portfolio into its new ‘plant-based 2.0’ platform.
While explaining the new plant-based 2.0 platform, the company stated the integration of dairy-like technology into the company’s vegan dairy range. The company will be launching the technology in North America through its subsidiaries – So Delicious’ Wondermilk and Silk’s NextMilk, and in Europe through Alpro – a European dairy company that Danone acquired in 2017.
With this technology, Danone will be making taste and texture improvements in its products including almond, oat, coconut, and soy milk, as well as other dairy products such as cheeses and spreads that are made of plant-based milk.
In May 2021, Nestlé S.A. – a Swiss multinational food and drink processing conglomerate corporation – announced that it has launched Wunda, its new plant-based milk product made of yellow peas. Nestlé is set to launch the new brand in various European countries such as France, the Netherlands and Portugal, where it would be facing fierce competition from the major brands such as Oatly and Alpro.
The new product range Wunda includes three categories – chocolate flavoured, unsweetened, and original flavour. The delicious pea-based milk product is also low in sugar and fat, and high in fibre and protein, while it also includes vitamins B2, B12, D, and calcium, states the company.
Nestlé further highlighted that its R&D Accelerator initiative boosted the development of Wunda as its ‘intrapreneurs’ capitalized on the company’s expertise in plant-based milk and dairy manufacturing business. With the launch of Wunda, the company aims to gain a stronger position in the dairy alternative market, initially in the European continent and then across the globe.
In May 2022, Ripple Foods – a California-based brand of pea-protein dairy alternative products – announced that it has launched its new plant-based milk product – Oatmilk + Protein. With the growing popularity of oat-based milk, the company added its effort to enhance the nutritional value of its oat milk products with the launch of Ripple Oatmilk + Protein.
The company made the new oat milk containing 6 gm of protein which is at least 3 times more protein than other oat milk products available in the market. The plant-based milk product also features at least 50% less sugar and 50% more calcium than dairy milk products, while keeping its great taste and creamy texture intact, states Ripple in its news release.
The protein used in the Ripple Oatmilk + Protein is said to be gluten-free oats protein and ultra-clean pea protein. The company also launched a new integrated marketing campaign called “Moove Over to Ripple” in April 2022, to inspire consumers to switch to Ripple products from other dairy or milk alternatives available in the market. The new product will be made available at conventional grocery stores, states Ripple.
