Japan had a total installed capacity of 283,291 MW with power generation of 1,139 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2010. As of 2010, the nuclear capacity was 42,408 MW and the nuclear power generation was about 280 billion kWh. Nuclear power contributed around 24.6% of the countrys electricity mix in 2010. Post nuclear crisis in Japan (March 2011), 13 nuclear power reactors were temporarily shutdown for safety checks, reviews and upgrades. The country had 37 operational nuclear power reactors which are of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) type. But as of mid May 2011, only 17 nuclear power reactors were operational and the rest of 20 nuclear power reactors were shutdown for periodic inspections. There are two nuclear power reactors which are under construction and there are around 10 nuclear power reactors which are under planned, proposed and reasonably firmly planned stages. The nuclear policy of the country mainly focuses on the nuclear safety. Tokyo Electric Power Company Inc, Kyushu Electric Power Co Inc, Shikoku Electric Power Co Inc and Kansai Electric Power Company Inc are the key players in the Japans nuclear power industry. The electricity sector in the country is largely based on thermal and nuclear sources. The Japans nuclear energy industry is expected to experience a increase in the installed nuclear capacity with new builds, planned and proposed reactors.
