Iceland completes multi-band spectrum auction for LTE services
There is effective competition in Iceland’s mobile and broadband markets, with a number of players having emerged to challenge the dominance of the two leading players Síminn and Vodafone Iceland. Vodafone Iceland in late 2017 secured regulatory approval for its acquisition of most of the telecoms and media interests of 365 Media, which has struggled in the telecoms sector in recent years. The new entrant Nova has become the leading player in the mobile market, and has quickly expanded its presence in the fixed-line segment.

The telecom market retained some resilience following the economic downturn of 2008, and it has continued to show solid growth in recent years, supported by continuing investment in mobile and fixed-line broadband infrastructure. The government has also supported Next Generation Access networks, particularly in rural areas.

Key developments:

  • Regulator concludes auction of spectrum in the 700MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz bands;
  • Capital Advisers acquires Nova;
  • Vodafone Iceland extends 500Mb/s FttP service to northern areas of Iceland;
  • Síminn’s LTE network delivering data at up to 300Mb/s;
  • Vodafone Iceland secures regulatory approval for its acquisition of 365 Media businesses;
  • Regulator reduces MTRs effective from January 2018;
  • LTE licensees providing 99% population coverage.
  • Report update includes the regulator’s annual report for 2017 and market data to December 2017, operator data to Q1 2018, recent market developments.
