1.Market Size and Sales 

The cathode material output of China reached 161.6 kilotons in 2016, which increased by 43% on a YoY basis. The growth was mainly driven by a 60% output increase in power battery market. In 2016, the growth of China’s cathode material production value (RMB 20.8 billion in 2016, increased by 54%) was faster than its output due to the continuous pricing increasing.

Among which, the output of LFP was 57 kilotons in 2016 with a YoY growth rate of 75%, accounting for 35.3% of total cathode material output. The development of power battery and energy storage battery markets have affected the demand positively. But due to the original limitation of LFP’s energy density, the usage of LFP will probably see the ceiling around 2018-2019 and transfer to a downturn trend. The global LFP capacity is concentrated in Mainland China and Taiwan. 

2. Price Trends

 At present, China LFP cathode material price maintains at RMB 90-100 thousand per ton. The price will gradually fall affected by increasing production scale and over capacity. It is estimated that the price of cathode material will fall to RMB 60-70 thousand per ton in 2020, with a decreasing range of 30%-40%.

3.Technical Trends

The energy density roadmap of LFP in 2017-mechanical weight loss+ lightweight + LMFP material.

  1. Mechanical weight loss: Lighting technology of auxiliary materials ( shell, foil), combined with optimized design of cell space, can improve 5% energy density while insuring the mechanical strength.
  2. Meet the subsidy requirement of 115wh/kg energy density: enlarging battery size, lighting pack. This process will affect the safety and consistency of batteries, even sacrifice battery performance.
  3. Development of new LMFP materials: Phostech’s pilot product (EXM2336) can reach 152mAh/g capacity per gram and 1.5g/cm3 tap density at 0.1C charge-discharge. Internationally, Phostech, Sumitomo Osaka Cement and Dow Chemical can supply pilot LMFP products. In China, Tianjin STL Energy, Taiwan Hirose and BYD has started pilot plant test.

4. Competitive Landscape

  • The TOP10 LFP material manufactures in China accounts for nearly 85% of the market share, yet it doesn’t stop other enterprises stepping into the market. According to incomplete statistics, along with the operation of LFP capacities under construction, the total LFP capacity will reach 250 kilotons in 2018, which will be highly above the demand of around 90 kilotons. LFP batteries will be mainly used in electric buses and gradually turn to energy storage use in the future.
  • The price of LFP cathode material appears a downturn trend, on the other hand, few of these manufacturers can meet the power battery clients’ demand for higher performance lithium iron materials. Currently the energy density of domestic LFP battery system is about 85~100Wh/kg, which is relatively low. Capacity per gram and compact density of most domestic LFP materials are below 135wh/kg and 2.3g/cm3 respectively.
