Ceilometer is a tool that uses laser beam or light source to measure the distance of a cloud base or cloud ceiling with respect to ground. Ceilometer is also used to measure aerosol concentration present in the atmosphere. Cloud ceiling is the lowest visible portion of the cloud and an aerosol is a non-homogenous, non-crystalline substance consisting of large molecules of the solid particles or liquid droplets in air or another gas. Examples of aerosol includes fog, dust, forest exudates, geyser steam, air pollutants and smoke. A ceilometer consist of a projector, a recorder and a detector. To measure the cloud base height, the projector of a ceilometer emits laser or light signals into the sky. The reflected signals from the cloud is being detected by the detector of the ceilometer that is placed near to the ceilometer projectors. The recorder of the ceilometer is being calibrated in such a way that it directly shows the cloud height. Ceilometer is used to measure cloud layers or multiple cloud layers. Ceilometer either uses triangulation method or time travel method to calculate the cloud base distance. Ceilometers are also used for variety of purpose including the structure and composition of the atmosphere, gas presence and concentration in the atmosphere, wind speeds and to detect wind currents. Furthermore, ceilometers can be installed at environmentally hazard places to alert air traffic control rooms about any aerosol such volcanic ash, fogs and thus allows aircrafts to reroute their directions.  Laser ceilometer are set up at commercial airport in New Zealand to map clouds of volcanic ash and alert pilot to avoid damage to aircraft. Ceilometer has a capability of measuring cloud base as high as 3000ft.
