Report Description

Carbolic oil, also called middle oil, is a fraction obtained in coal-tar distillation primarily containing tar acids and, sometimes, naphthalene. Coal tar is a complex mixture of condensable organic components, emerging from coal carbonization. During fractionation of the coal tar, the carbolic oil fraction is separated and contains 30–35 wt% phenolic components. Carbolic oil is treated with diluted caustic soda to extract the phenols as sodium phenolate salts. The aqueous phenolate solution is then treated with carbon dioxide to liberate the phenols from the salts. This crude phenol fraction from carbolic oil consists of phenol, cresols, and xylenols.  A new process, called micelle extraction, is proposed for the recovery of phenols from carbolic oil by extraction. The solubility of anionic surfactants in aqueous form is used. The effectiveness of the single-stage extraction is determined depending on the type of substance and its concentration.

On the basis of application, the carbolic oil market can be segmented into extraction of phenol, and pyridine bases. Extraction of phenol is an important segment of the application of carbonic oil as phenol is used in various industries. Approximately, two-third of the total phenol produced globally is used to prepare reagents consumed in the plastic manufacturing industry. Phenol is also used in the study and extraction of bio-molecules. Phenol finds application in molecular biology in the extraction of nucleic acids from tissue samples. Phenol is also used in the cosmetic industry in the manufacturing of sunscreens, skin lightening creams, and hair coloring solutions. Simultaneous extraction of bases and phenols for carbolic oil is done by using methanol-water mixture and hexane as solvents. The common phenol hydroquinone is the component of photograph developer that reduces the exposed silver bromide crystals to black metallic silver. Other substitutions of phenol are used in the dye industry to manufacture intensely colored azo dyes. Mixtures of phenols, especially cresols, are used as components in wood preservatives such as creosote. Thus, usage of carbolic oil in the production of phenol makes it a diverse chemical, thereby rendering the extraction of phenol an important application segment.

The phenol industry is the driver of the carbolic oil market. Usage of carbolic acid in the extraction of phenol makes it a propelling factor of the carbolic oil market. Usage of phenol in a wide range of industries is estimated to boost the carbonic oil market.

Based on geography, the carbolic oil market can be divided into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific constituted the largest market share of the carbolic oil market. In Asia Pacific, China has emerged as the dominant region for the carbolic oil market and is considered to be the major country for the carbolic oil market in Asia Pacific region. Furthermore, China and India have been driving the regional carbonic oil market owing to the increase in consumption of carbolic acid in manufacturing of industrial products. North America and Europe are expected to have a steady growth during the forecasted period. The carbonic oil market in Europe and North America is projected to expand at a steady pace owing to stringent government norms to use this product as it is toxic and harmful to the environment.

Key manufacturers of carbolic oil are Industrial Química del Nalón, Shanghai HaiChagn Petroleum Equipment Co. Ltd., Hindustan Chemicals & Almn. Industries, and chinagtchem.
