Adapting a specific diet plan has become popular these days with increasing need to lead a healthy lifestyle. If you are looking for a diet to enhance your athletic performance, look no further than Mediterranean diet. A new research, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition discovered that adapting this diet even for four days will enhance your performance in exercise.
Mediterranean diet has immense nutritional value and contains numerous compounds to improve athletic performance. It emphasizes on consuming plant-based foods but also allows a moderate consumption of fish and dairy products. It not only wards off chronic diseases but offers numerous other benefits including cardioprotective effects.
Benefits of Mediterranean diet over the Western diet:
Edward Weiss, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at SLU conducted a study to see the effects of Mediterranean and Western diets on seven women and four men. The participants were essentially recreationally active. He also wanted to see what effects these two diets have on anaerobic exercise.
The results suggested that adhering to a Mediterranean diet elevated the performance on a 5 km treadmill by 6 percent. People could run faster on a treadmill following this diet as opposed to Western diet. However, it had no effects on the performance of muscle strengthening exercise. The findings suggest that adapting Mediterranean diet even for four days enhances endurance exercise performance. The fact that this diet incorporates foods containing antioxidants and nitrates also gives it a one up over the Western diet.
The report also suggested that the benefits of the Mediterranean diet were lost after switching to Western diet. Prof, Weiss concluded saying, “This study provides evidence that a diet that is known to be good for health is also good for exercise performance.”
