Ketamine is mainly used in the treatment of depression. It is considered to be solely effective drug on the glutamate system in the brain. However, the new research has discovered that the drug might be affecting the brain of patients. The researchers suggest that ketamine drugs might effect on the opioid system of the brain like the morphine or oxycodone.

The research concluded that the drug is an effective drug for depression, but the researchers suggest limited use of the drug as an antidepressant. Its overconsumption may lead to further problems specifically, opioid addiction. A reliance on the painkillers has already reached to crisis level in the US.

Alan Schatzberg, one of the researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine in California said, before the study, the researchers were not sure that ketamine is really effective or not. Now it is clear that the drug is really effective, but it has some of the possible side effects.

The study is based on the 12 volunteers who had previously struggled to find an effective treatment for their depression were twice given a dose of ketamine. Results showed the symptoms of depression vastly improved in the placebo test, but not the naltrexone test. It suggests that it works on the brain of opioid receptors.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn't approved ketamine for the treatment of depression, but as a short-term fix, the researchers are prescribing the drug as it is very much effect on the improvement of the patient.

These new findings have been published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
