Apple is reportedly in process of acquiring self-drive startup Drive.ai. While there is no confirmation from both the companies on the development, reports state that the move primarily an attempt to ‘acquire-hire’. This means that Apple is looking to primarily hire the talent force focusing the engineering section of the self-drive startup.

Set up in 2016, Drive.ai is an idea born out of the AI lab in Stanford University. Drive.ai was born with the fundamental idea of not only developing functional autonomous systems, but also communication systems that can work in tandem with human drivers and pedestrians.

Drive.ai Needs Funding

With a decent start, Drive.ai tweaked its business model and provided retrofitting services to commercial fleets. Later, last year, they started testing their own self-operated pick-up and drop-off service in Frisco, Texas.

According to reports, Drive.ai is looking for funding to ensure consistent money flow to sustain business. On the other hand, Apple has had a rather unstable past when it comes to testing and developing self-drive vehicles. It has attempted to change the leadership for its flagship project ‘the Titan Car’. On the other hand, Apple is continuing to test its self-drive vehicles on roads, but we are unclear about its approach and goals.
