Facebook has decided to overhaul its news feed where users will soon see posts focused more on their family and friends, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Thursday. Zuckerberg has admitted that the company’s business could face a challenge in the short term because of the change as most brands and publishers depend on the news feed for promotion and distribution. The company would, however, be making the move to make sure users spend quality time on Facebook. Nearly 2.0 billion users will now see more updates from their family and friends and fewer media content including viral videos and news articles on Facebook.

CEO Aims to Ensure Time Spent on Facebook is Time Spent Well

Facebook has been looking to ensure its users do not hurt their wellbeing when spending time on the social media platform and have more meaningful social interactions. Besides allowing users to enjoy more meaningful interactions, the product teams have been concentrating on offering more relevant content. Facebook has already shared the hot seat with competitors Google and Twitter to discuss with lawmakers about its role in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. There had been trolls from Russia that abused the social media platform to scatter disharmony among Americans and influence the result.

Zuckerberg has already publicized about its annual challenge for 2018: fixing problems that spread like a wildfire on Facebook, such abuse and hate. The company has expected its measures of engagement and the time spent by its users on the social media platform to go down due to the change. However, Zuckerberg has said that the company believes in doing the right thing that will be good for the community.
