Evonik Industries AG recently announced that it has inaugurated an applied technology laboratory, which is dedicated specifically to medical devices. The applied technology laboratory is located in Shanghai, China. According to Evonik Industries AG, the laboratory will serve and support all market players of the medical devices. The laboratory will support the medical device manufacturers and developers who use Evonik polymers for their projects.
The new applied technology laboratory in Shanghai will aim to carry out activities such as selection of suitable material and devices for respective application and manufacturing technical samples, which will be used for feasibility studies. The laboratory will also take care of characterization of conditions of production process for successful scale-up and design of the products. Activities such as extrusion and injection molding will also be taken care by the new laboratory. According to Essen, the Germany based company, the very first project at the applied technology laboratory will start in coming few weeks.
Many such laboratories for medical devices will be planned to be built in other locations. Another laboratory is planned to be inaugurated in the next few days, for Darmstadt, Germany. This laboratory is planned to serve the market in the European region. Jean-Luc Herbeaux said that the medical devices market is developing fast and it will play an important role for the health care business in China. Strong growth in the medical devices market is expected, especially is China, in coming few years. Resomer and Resomer Select, the brand of Evonik, offers biodegradable polymers, which are commonly used in many medical devices such as plates and orthopedic screw. Implanted devices, which are designed with Resomer, are featured with ability to absorb without any traces in body for a period of up to two years. This eliminates the necessity of second surgery in order to remove the device.
