European Union is expected to help India with a template to build smart cities in India which will boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s project to build 100 smart cities across the nation. The EU has been assisting Maharashtra in transforming Mumbai into a smart city since 2012, and is looking forward to offer its expertise in building other smart cities in India. The EU has emerged as India’s largest trading partner and its offer to help India in smart cities project will most likely be discussed at the India-EU summit in Brussels this year.
According to Joao Cravinho, the EU Ambassador to India, the government’s smart city project has boosted the concept and the EU, through its expertise on developing smart cities in Eastern, Central, and Western Europe, can offer a wide range of suggestions to India. The ambassador mentioned that to increase the sustainability of a city, pre-planning and subsequent planning are very important.
The smart city project revolves around making the Indian cities sustainable and energy efficient amid the increasing population. The EU draws it experience about smart city development from its member states. As a part of developing smart cities, the European states have experience in cleaning rivers and can help India to clean Ganga and other rivers in the country as well as suggest ways to generate revenue from waterways. Also, the EU can help Indian government in heritage conservation to generate revenue. To promote the smart city concept, the EU is organizing a mega meet in Mumbai this month.
