The patients who are suffering from uncomplicated flu can take a single oral dose of Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil) that will help them in treating it. It can be consumed if the symptoms stay for more than 48 hours. Importantly, this is the first time in 20 years that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a novel antiviral flu drug. When FDA approved this drug, they stated one could reduce the symptoms and period of the illness within 48 hours of getting sick with the flu. Before the drug was approved, it went under two clinical trials on patients who took either a placebo, Xofluza or another antiviral flu treatment.
According to an emergency physician Dr. Robert Glatter, working at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City explained that the unique aspect to consider while understanding Xofluza is that it acts to stops replication of the flu virus primarily. This is done at the early stage that was not the case with the current medication such as zanamivir or oseltamivir. These medications only block spread of virus that was already produced by the host cell. He also added by saying that the intake of this medicine will reduce the period of symptoms such as muscle ache and fever, it may also minimize the probability of developing downstream complications such as pneumonia.
However, the most common side effect seen in the patient after taking Xofluza was bronchitis and diarrhea.
