2-Butoxyethanol, also known as Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, is an organic compound belonging to the family of glycol ethers. It is obtained by ethoxylation of butanol and ethylene oxide. 2-butoxyethanol can also be synthesized by etherification reaction of butanol and 2- chloroethanol. It is a colorless chemical that has a scent like ether. 2-butoxyethanol is an inexpensive organic solvent that is relatively less volatile. Its chemical formula is C6H14O2. It has a high boiling point i.e. 171 degree Celsius and is completely soluble in water, ketones, and alcohols. It is classified as ‘irritant’ based on the chemical safety guidelines. Other synonyms for 2-butoxyethanol are 111-76-2, butyl cellosolve, glycol butyl ether, 3-oxa-1-heptanol, ethanol 2- butoxy- n- butoxyenthanol, and gafcol EB. 2-butoxyethanol is a little dense than water and causes irritation to skin and eyes if exposed.
