Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana bought out Royal Unibrew's share in Antigua Brewery in early 2010, along with Antigua PET Plant, St Vincent Brewery and Dominica Brewery and Beverages for US$31 m. Although no effects have been seen in the majority of markets, production in Antigua was stopped in May 2011 and all Antigua Brewery brands are now imported from St Vincent. Tourist numbers have been helped in Guadeloupe in particular, by increasing cruise ship visits.

  • The Netherland Antilles were dissolved on 10 October 2010. As a result, Canadean has split out the Netherland Antilles data from 2011 onwards into three key markets: Aruba, St Maarten and Curacao and Others. This allows a more clear and accurate view of the market.
  • In a continued effort to protect local producers, the government's rules and duties which deter imported brands have resulted in declining imports figures for the third year in a row.
  • The highly popular Carib brand struggled in Trinidad following a slowdown in consumerism. However, its low alcohol counterpart, Shandy Carib, was still successful.
  • On the whole, Caribbean tourist numbers boosted beer consumption in 2011.
  • In April 2012, Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana announced a strategic alliance with A-BInBev to form the leading beverage company in the Caribbean. At present, a significant effect on the market is not forecast.

  • In early 2012 Carlsberg re-entered the Trinidadian market with NWT Enterprises Ltd as the distributor. Significant aggressive investment was supported by Carlsberg Group.
  • Increased marketing activity in the on-trade from key market players was seen throughout the year in most markets. The move is expected to result in some impressive performances for the year to come.
