Key Market Issues
Across the region, as consumers are becoming more health conscious, packaged water and bulk/HOD water is experiencing significant growth. Furthermore, the growth rate of carbonates is slowing in some parts of the region.

Natural disasters and a number of environmental issues throughout Asia in recent years are still having significant consequences for the growth of certain segments, with packaged water's share growing as the demand for clean water remains high.

A number of excise taxes have been placed on the sale of alcoholic drinks throughout the region which has slightly reduced the growth rate of alcoholic drinks, particularly those with higher alcohol content such as the spirits segment.

Consumption was significantly impacted by unseasonable weather, with the hotter summers in Asia leading to increased growth, notably within the carbonates, packaged water and beer categories.

Poor economic performance in particular areas of Asia resulted in a decline or slowing of growth in most categories, but especially in higher price categories such as juice drinks. Conversely, in countries in Asia that have experienced economic growth, there continues to be strong growth in consumption across the categories.

Key Highlights
Thailand's government scheme to provide a tax rebate for first time buyers of cars was unexpectedly expensive leaving the purchasing power and disposable income of the middle-class severely diminished. As such, growth was limited in all categories.

The beer category continues to decline in Japan as a result of a lack of interest in alcoholic drinks as a whole by younger consumers. However, flavoured alcoholic beverages continue to grow as younger consumers favour sweetened alcoholic beverages rather than the bitter taste of beer.

Despite price increases at three times the inflation rate, India's coffee consumption rose by 4% this year thanks to the growing popularity of coffee lounges, premix vending machines and coffee machines at modern retail outlets

The dairy category as a whole maintained a 10% growth rate in the growing economy in China. Drinking yogurt saw the fastest growth amongst those categories with nearly 17% growth and a CAGR of almost 15%.

Sports drinks in Vietnam grew by 35% thanks to the increase in young consumers who love sports and outdoor activities. An increased number of fitness centers and gyms in cities demonstrate the growing trend of health and exercise in Vietnam.
