After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, several countries adopted ways to generate energy using methods that didn’t involve any nuclear sources. At the forefront of this change has been Germany. However, in doing so, the focus of this nation on the renewables has resulted in a major issue. This is about the over production of renewable energy.
Currently, Germany has enough energy to power a minimum of 20 million homes in Europe. Also, renewable energy has now become the preferred source for generating electricity in the nation. The high amount of generation of power in Germany from renewables is so much that it is proving difficult to handle. This over generation of power is spilling over the neighboring nations such as Poland and Czech Republic. The over generation of electricity has created a major issue that is a power blackout can result if there occurs a sudden supply disruption.
The neighboring countries of Poland and Czech Republic are investing around US$180 million to shore their grids from Germany’s energy production. Germany needs to upgrade its network in order to over energy production. Many grid firms in the country are investing around US$24 billion to upgrade their network in order to change its current high voltage power lines.
Several companies in the country are coming up with innovative ways to accommodate this overflow of energy. An energy storage system introduced in the market converts the excess power into gaseous power by producing a zero carbon hydrogen gas, which is then converted to methane and used in the future as an energy storage.
This over production issue has made the power in Germany relatively cheaper to other countries. Furthermore, it is expected to attract several innovations in the energy storage/harvesting market. To harvest the energy from a grid, a specific time limit and capacity needs to be followed. In the coming few months, it is projected that several companies will come up with novel ways to harvest this excess energy in the country and save it for future use.
