Taylor Swift, the famous American pop star is launching her own clothing line to be merchandised by the two biggest online retailers in China, in an effort to counter rampant imitation in the country.
The 25 year old singer is partnering with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and JD.com to merchandise Taylor Swift clothing line items directly for consumers in China.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the step in s to counter the huge market for unauthorized Taylor Swift products which is thriving in China, with e-commerce retailers selling everything from pirated autographed guitars to fake perfumes.
As per the partnership, each apparel item from the Taylor Swift line will carry a special tag for customers to track the authenticity of the product online.
Western companies have long been complaining of illegal merchandising and intellectual property theft in China.
Earlier in the year, the trade group of clothing makers, the American Apparel and Footwear Association’ made a written complaint to the U.S. Trade Representative about the high practice of selling counterfeit goods on Alibaba and its associated websites, particularly Taobao.
TaoBao, which is an Alibaba sister company is notorious for being one of the biggest platforms for merchandising counterfeit products. The members alleged that innumerable counterfeit products are encountered on TaoBao every day, which lead to lost sales worth millions of dollars, reputation damage, legal expenses, and exhaustion of internal resources.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a pair of fake Taylor Swift sneakers cost about $US10. Alibaba commented to be taking the issue seriously.
From next month inwards, Alibaba’s Tmall market and JD.com will merchandise Taylor Swift T-shirts at a cost of $US60. In addition to this, the singer is launching a women’s clothing line exclusively on JD.com that will offer sweatshirts, high quality dresses ranging from US$100 to US$120.
