Fast-food giants McDonald’s, KFC and Taco Bell may be taking great strides in the global market, but back home in the United States, they are losing to regional players such as In-N-Out Burger, Chick-fil-A and Chipotle Mexican Grill, says a fast-food survey by Consumer Reports.

The survey that was released on Wednesday, has ranked In-N-Out-Burger as being the best hamburger chain in the industry based on parameters such as service, value, and food quality. Another regional player, Rubio\'s Fresh Mexican Grill, was ranked the best Mexican chain. Among the chicken chains category, Chick-fil-A gained a lead.

The results are based on sales. Currently, a number of global majors in the United States are struggling to understand the right approach to attract younger American diners who are inclined towards healthy, fresh food. A deciding factor for many Americans now is food quality, and not necessarily just lower price, said Consumer Reports’ senior projects editor Tod Marks. He also termed these results as a ‘wake-up call’ for the fast-food industry. The survey was based on a poll comprising 32,405 subscribers.

In the hamburger restaurants category, the world’s largest chain McDonald’s ranked behind 20 other chains. Mexican food giant Taco Bell finished at the eighth position in the Mexican chains category. KFC, a Yum Brands Inc. (which also owns Taco Bell) company ranked eighth in the chicken restaurant category.

Papa Murphy\'s Take \'N\' Bake Pizza emerged the leader in the pizza chain category, beating bigger rivals such as Domino’s Pizza Inc. and Papa John\'s International Inc.
