The much talked about 'Music, Perfect Pitch for a Sound Education' program by First Global Bank has teamed up with Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), which is the world’s premier music examining organization. The program is especially meant for teachers. It was started in October 2011 and is presently being conducted at John Rollins Success Primary, Bickersteth Primary and Infant, and the Farm Primary and Junior High Schools in St James. Other than these the program is also available in several schools and parishes.
The program has been designed for students at the grade 3 level with an intention to blend in arithmetic and literacy with music for better learning. According to Kathryn Moyston-Lawson, honorary representative of the ABRSM, Jamaica the aim of this venture is to improve music literacy via expertise of the teaching and training. She stated that her own experience made her realize that music can make a world of a difference in improvising conventional teaching methods. She further added this collaboration is expected to make a huge difference in several schools and lives in Jamiaca in the coming years. She remained certain of the fact that music is going to chance the social, academic, and creative IQs of Jamaican students.
The program will be given further levels of certification and accreditation upon satisfying the requirements of ABRSM. Her keen interest in the program is mainly due to the strong relationship between mathematics and music and their positive codependency.
Kerry-Ann Ramdeen-Johns marketing officer for FGB's stated that they will relentlessly work towards ensuring that literacy and numeracy are improved in the region at a very critical stage of the students life.
