Biometric sensors incorporate physical characters of the human body with digital technology to provide biometric security. Fingerprints, vein structures in hands, and face metrics are some of the common physical traits that are used to prepare required templates. A biometric sensor converts biometric treats such as the face, voice, and fingerprints of people into an electric signal. Biometric sensors are light in weight and can be easily installed in various devices. Biometric sensors are used in various applications such as automotive, commercial centers, consumer electronics, and hospitality industry. Increasing emphasis on advanced safety and security, facial scan, application of fingerprint scan, voice scan, and hand scan have propelled the global biometric sensors market in the recent past.
In the areas where safety, security, and privacy are the primary elements of concern, biometric sensors are predicted to find increasing opportunities in various applications such as making operations and transactions. However, factors such as lack of standardization in the development of technical advancements and cultural barriers are expected to restrict the growth of the global biometric sensors market in the years to come. Growing number of vendors integrating various fingerprint sensors in mobile devices is expected to further propel the global biometric sensors market in the coming few years.
Biometric modifications including eye-based, voice, and face recognition are predicted to be the emerging technologies and are gradually being integrated into various mobile devices including tablets and smartphones. The governments of various countries are focusing on integrating biometric sensors in various projects such as e-driving, e-passports, national IDs and border management. Biometrics is expected to be universal in day to day life as there has been an increase in incidences such as security hacks, password breaks, and illegal access to individual details.
It is expected that higher number of people will use mobile payment applications and a higher number of applications will influence the fingerprint sensor due to the introduction of sensor APIs from IOS and Android. With growing number of people adopting biometric sensors, around 550 to 650 units of biometric sensors are expected to be sold by 2016. Asia Pacific is expected to lead the global biometric sensors market in the next five years, followed by North America.
