San Antonio has developed rapidly in the recent past and this has allowed the construction industry to boost their construction projects. The construction companies in San Antonio are facing shortage of construction workers. Construction companies recently said that they are in urgent need of skilled construction workers to fulfill the demand and complete the construction projects that are in the pipeline. This indicated that training in technical departments will be necessary in order to meet the growing demand. David Carrilli, the program coordinator of St. Phillip’s College said that currently there are more construction projects in San Antonio than there is workforce.

The need for skilled construction workers is such that students at St. Phillips College are already receiving job offers in the construction industry and some have started making money, around $15 to $20 an hour. According to Carrillo, the students are hired immediately in the construction industry workforce and are paid as promised. The construction companies in San Antonio stated that they are not able to maintain the consistency in work that is being contracted. Kristi Villanueva, the deputy program manager of Capital Electric, Inc. said that the company is hiring for capital itself. The company needs brick layers and masons, Kristi said. There is a need for welders. The company also needs concrete people and it is getting difficult to find them, stated Kristi.

According to Kristi, it is a bad situation for the construction business if there is a shortage of workers. He also stated that some of the jobs definitely slow down temporarily as the company is looking for skilled personnel. The construction companies in San Antonio are planning to come together and have a discussion with the county and city leaders about the situation and ask for more construction workers. Carrillo said that there are plenty of opportunities in the construction industry and job seekers can grab them at St. Phillip’s College.
