McCain Foods MD Vikas Mittal, Ferrero Group India head Luigi Oddone,Mother Dairy MD S Nagarajan, Cargill India MD Siraj Chaudhry, Kellogg MD Sangeeta Pendurkar, Coca-Cola India President Venkatesh Kini, and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare managing director Zubair Ahmed  were a part of the committee that met with Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Chairman K Chandramouli and the other members for a high-profile meeting. The meeting was essentially to request the organization to speed up the product approvals and avoid further miscommunications between authorities.

The meeting was a result of the companies trying to tap into growing market after a slump they experience during the recession. To cater to the growing market, the companies intend to get fast approvals from the organization.

The high-profile meeting was kept under wraps, including the companies not wanting to discuss the agenda, as the business in these meetings is extremely sensitive.

Chandramouli only mentioned meeting the CEOs of the several companies and discusses ideas. Nothing beyond this was mentioned. Usually FSSAI officials settle such matters. However, this time it has reached higher authorities.

One of the officials reported, amongst the many points discussed at the meeting, the companies requested taking their products quickly to the market. The further stated, the need for approval is urgent at a time when product innovation is giving the food sector a huge impetus.

However, as the world knows it the relationship shared by food and drug firms and FSSAI isn’t a rosy one. The two have always been at loggerheads about approval of new products, imports, and labeling rules.
