The European Union (EU) lately announced that they have signed a fifth generation (5G) agreement with China to reach the top level in the global competitive market of the telecommunication and wireless industry. Both, the European Union and China are committed to openness and trade in terms of accessing the 5G network research funding, membership of EU and Chinese 5G associations, and market access, stated an official. The agreement signed by China and the European Union on Monday in Beijing, is considered to be a big milestone by both, China and Europe, to race ahead in the competitive world of the telecommunication industry.

Gunther Oettinger, the digital society and economy commissioner of the European Union, said that, signing the agreement will be crucial for the success of the 5G network. By signing a 5G network contract with China, the European Union has teamed up with the most successful and important Asian partners, stated Gunther. 5G network will be a reality till 2020 and thereafter will be commercially available, he stated. As per the 5G network agreement, till 2015, both, China and Europe will seek knowledge regarding basic concept of 5G, basic functionalities, time plan, and key technologies of 5G.

Joint research activities will be planned by both the countries to promote mutual cooperation and participation of enterprises in the 5G network research projects. Meanwhile, representatives from China and EU will concentrate to identify radio frequency bands in order to meet the new requirements for the fifth generation network. As standardization of 5G is predicted to commence in 2016, the EU considered the agreement to be ‘very timely’. The European Commission, executive body of EU, is planning to invest EUR 700 million through the program, ‘The Horizon 2020’, to support 5G network innovation and research. With this, China and EU will take the telecommunication and wireless industry one step ahead.
