The world’s largest travel review site, TripAdvisor, revealed that China has emerged as the website’s largest market with growing number of Chinese travelers. Joost Schreve, VP of TripAdvisor’s mobile product, attributed this to the rising trend among the Chinese tourists to visit the world’s top destinations for a second or a third time which has resulted to the tourists looking out for the authentic restaurants and hotels. As per the data revealed by the China National Tourism Administration, Chinese travelers made 110 million oversea trips last year. The website aims to review every restaurant in the world and is translating the information on the website into Chinese for the benefit of the Chinese tourists.
TripAdvisor has 10 million registered users and with 150 million reviews, the website has robust site statistics of 35 million unique visitors in a month. Started in 2000, the company’s provides information on 400,000 hotels and 90,000 tourist destinations across the globe. In 2009, it started its Chinese website, Daodao.com which provides information on 20,000 hotels in China. Schreve mentioned that the Chinese travelers are rapidly adopting new technology in mobile while planning their travels and this has led the company to focus more on its mobile sector. It is the key division of the company with more than 3,000 staffs.
According to TripAdvisor data, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan are the top destinations for the Chinese travelers. It has been observed by the website that the tourists show great interest on information related to shopping. The company is now focusing on providing shopping information to the Chinese travelers in the future.
